Common questions

Where can I get married in the Lake District and Cumbria?
All over the region — lakeside country-house hotels around Windermere, fell-side barns, castles and walled gardens across the Eden Valley, and characterful venues in and around Carlisle. Browse them all on our Lake District and Cumbria & Carlisle venue pages.
Can I get married at Gretna Green without using the Famous Blacksmiths Shop?
Yes. The Blacksmiths Shop is the best-known option, but Gretna and the surrounding area have plenty of independent venues, hotels and register-office ceremonies. We list them side by side so you can choose freely — see Gretna Green weddings.
Do I need to live in Scotland to get married at Gretna Green?
No — there is no residency requirement to marry in Scotland, which is exactly why couples from England and further afield come to Gretna. You give notice to the local registrar (usually around 29 days ahead). Full detail on our how to get married at Gretna Green guide.
How much does a wedding in the Lakes or at Gretna Green cost?
It varies hugely — an intimate Gretna package can start around £1,200, while an exclusive-use Lakes country house runs to many thousands. Work out your own figure with our free wedding budget calculator, and see real registrar pricing on the Gretna cost page.
What wedding suppliers will I need?
Typically a photographer, flowers, a cake, transport, hair & makeup and music — plus catering if your venue doesn't provide it. Browse every local wedding supplier by category, or start with our wedding checklist.
